Dongtan, China’s deserted eco-city

With China’s ever increasing population, it was decided to create a city that was sustainable and was even able to produce it’s own electricity. The project was predicted to be almost completed by 2020 but with questions over funding and corruption, construction has completely stopped.

I found this project interesting because i see it as another situation where society continues encounter hurdles caused from money when there is an impending threat of climate change bearing down on humanity. China’s expanding economy and population are perfect reasons for these eco-cities to cater to the needs of the people but it just comes down to the people holding the power and the conservative mindset that still is keeping everyone back.

The firm leading the project is ARUP who are an international building and infrastructure firm and has lead many ground-breaking and innovative projects.
