Indonesia’s history has been greatly influenced by neighboring countries. In the 7th century The Kingdom of Srivijaya became an important trade base between India, China and Indonesia bringing new cultural traditions and religious practices like Hinduism, Buddhism, and eventually Islam, which is now the dominant religion of Indonesia. European countries followed suit. Not until 350 years of Dutch rule came to an end in World War II did Indonesia finally declare its Independence.
